April 21, 2020 —– Chart #9
Hello Musical Friends,
Okay, today we are digging deep, all the way to 1967. A song written by the incredible song writer Jimmy Webb (more on this guy in future chart of the day emails), this tune was recorded by The Fifth Dimension and went to number 7 on the US Pop Singles Chart. No doubt this is not the first song that comes to mind when you sit down on the couch with your acoustic guitar. But, this is a hard tune to get out of your head once it gets in there! The song placed No. 43 on BMI’s “Top 100 Songs of the Century”.
“Up Up and Away” is today’s chart of the day. Bet you didn’t see that one coming 😊. A superb example of sunshine pop, themed around images of hot air ballooning, it cleaned up at the 10th Annual Grammy Awards in 1968, winning for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, Best Performance by a Vocal Group, Best Performance by a Chorus and Best Contemporary Song. The instrumental backing was performed by members of the Wrecking Crew, including guitarist Al Casey and drummer Hal Blaine.
Keep Rockin’,
Stan
